Why Sports Belong in the School Timetable

How Akshara's Physical Literacy Programme builds fitness, focus and confidence, and how sports scholarships support talented students.

By Akshara Sports Department

Short answer: regular, coached sport improves children’s fitness, concentration, teamwork and confidence. That is why Akshara builds sport into the school day through its Physical Literacy Programme, instead of leaving it to weekends.

What is physical literacy?

Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence and skill to stay active for life. It goes beyond being good at one sport. A physically literate child can run, jump, throw, catch, balance and swim with confidence, and enjoys doing it.

How Akshara teaches it

  • A structured curriculum that develops skills in steps, age by age
  • Professional coaches and physical education trainers
  • Dedicated infrastructure: football fields, basketball courts, cricket nets and splash pools for the youngest learners
  • Extra Time Zone (ETZ): after-school training where students choose the sports and activities they want to go deeper in

Sports scholarships

Students who represent their district, state or country are eligible for Akshara sports scholarships, so that talented athletes do not have to choose between their sport and their studies.

In the words of a champion

“Akshara is a beacon of excellence in both academics and sports.” — Bhaichung Bhutia, former captain of the Indian football team
